1. Basic Courses

For Beginners / New Comers:
An exciting encounter with precious marble! Dare to make that first blow and open up the fascinating world of sculpting, one of mankind‘s most ancient activities!

2-week Basic Courses:
Allow yourself 2 weeks for this work with a material which is completely new to you. After a short while you get used to the stone and the Italian conditions. But acquiring the skill of marble sculpting with hammer and chisel and the acquisition of a sculptor‘s approach take time.

Don‘t be afraid of the stone!
Our well-tried methods offer a gentle introduction - in particular to the beginner. Under the competent guidance of our tutors you choose and recover the required marble of the highest quality from natural resources. The weight you can carry and move yourself will determine the dimension of your project: formats vary from 15 to 30 kg. You will learn how to work with marble in a correct manner and will practice all steps necessary to complete your own sculpture – from finding the rough form to accomplishing a smooth or even polished surface. All your technical and artistic queries will be answered by an experienced sculptor. Instructions and advice are given several times a day in personal dialogues and occasional group meetings. At the end of the course we will view the finished works in private. Subject to your agreement we will also discuss the results and everybody can present his sculpture in a small exhibition at the Campo. If desired we can also arrange transport of the finished sculpture, packed in a sturdy wooden box and dispatched by a transport company. A 2-week basic course encompasses 10 working days with approx. 70 hours.

Excursions:
Integral to the course is an excursion within the working week. We will either visit to the traditional sculpting studios in Pietrasanta or, to the famous marble quarry nearby, opened by the old master Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Grand Marble Tour:
In the middle of your 2-week course – always on Saturdays – you can choose whether you want to spend the free day on your own or with others or whether you want to partake in our grand marble tour, an extensive drive or hike into the fascinating mountains of Carrara or Monte Altissimo. On foot or with our minibus we will take you on an unforgettable guided tour to marble quarries above and below ground. Included are visits to the processing marble industry (sawmill), an exhibition or a museum. Partaking in the grand marble tour is optional and can only be booked on the spot

2. Courses for the Advanced Learner

Many of our guests who have already participated in one or more marble courses either with us or elsewhere want to expand or refresh their skills. Or, quite simply, they want to work again at the Campo.
As advanced students you can attend one of our many basic courses and, choose either an instructor you already know or a new one.
The tutors will skilfully help you with personal tuition and active support to realise challenging and difficult projects and to consolidate and expand your knowledge and craftsmanship. You can create one or more sculptures, ask advice and learn new tricks of the trade far over and above the normal course programme.
For your choice of material and colour we have a well-assorted store at hand. Whether you are looking for the finest statuario, red or yellow Iranian travertine, green Aosta or black Port‘Oro marble, we have many interesting and rare varieties and colours in all sizes.
(List of costs and specifications is available at the Campo or on request)

3. Intensive Courses

In a 1-week course many would first like to take a closer look at sculpting in order to see whether it suits them or they simply can‘t afford the time for a 2-week course. Our 5-day intensive course offers an introduction into the world of marble sculpting and covers the same contents and approaches as the two-week basic courses (see above).
The works are smaller in size, at the outset the marble stone weighs up to about 15kg. It is possible to complete a marble sculpture in one week, but one needs to make full use of the working day. Intensive courses run for 5 days with 6-8 hours work each day. An excursion is also part of the programme and is incorporated into the weekly work schedule.
Friday afternoon the 1-week course is concluded with a detailed discussion and a presentation of the works at the Campo. Saturday after the course has finished you can partake in our grand marble tour (description see above
under basic courses. Bookable only on the spot). You can also treat yourself to a day off at the beach or to a sightseeing tour of the beautiful Tuscan cities nearby. For this you should book an extra night in Azzano and start your jouney back/on on Sunday.
Most of our two-week course dates are also bookable for a one-week period and our tutors will work intensively with you so you can complete your work. Please contact us if you are interested in a particular date which is not included in our overview.

4. Specialised Courses at Easter and in Autumn

Marble Sculpting with Pneumatic and Electrical Tools

with Peter Rosenzweig, Mauro Spadaccini, Claudia Farina and Roland Steger
For the advanced students this course offers an introduction to indispensable working methods with pneumatic and electric tools for cutting and smoothing the marble. This is important for the preparation of very delicate shapes or working with coloured marble and large blocks. At the beginning of the course we will either discuss the sculpture ideas put forward by the participants or develop new ones.
After choosing the material Itthis is followed by the cutting with the diamond encrusted disc and the quarrying of the coarse form. Subsequently the surface will be shaped with pneumatic tools and widia chisels. The smoothing of the form will be achieved by working with angle grinders, special turbines or well-tried manual labour.
Upon prior agreement with the tutors and other participants you can also partake in the excursions to the marble quarries and the artists studios, as well as in the marble tour at the weekend.
For 20 years we have twice a year offered these courses with several tutors and the support of Italian marble sculptor Mauro Spadaccini. Competent artistic and technical instruction will provide the basis for independent sculptural work.
Booking a specialised course will include the use of electric and pneumatic tools, special introduction and tuition and all consumables. Choice of stone material possible on the spot. Additional costs for special stones according to weight and quality, from €30 to approx.€150.

5. Specialised Course August 2010, sculpting in Granite

Sculpting in Granite

with Raphael Beil
The aim of this course is to introduce you to various methods of manual working with granite * as well as the use of electrical machines. Participants will be guided and supported in the artistic realisation of their individual design. You will experience a number of different methods, techniques and tools used to produce a finished -, either rough or polished - surface of a sculpture.
Due to the hard nature of the stone preference will be given to working with pneumatic and electrical machines. To reduce the impact of noise, dust and vibration we attach great importance to safety at work and the ergonomic approach to machinery and material. According to the level of experience and craftsmanship as well as the intended design you may select adequately sized blocks either from a granite factory or from the existing resources of the Campo.
We will cater to the individual needs of every participant through every stage of the project: from the rough cutting of the granite block to the finishing details of the sculpture‘s design or surface.
The creation of the sculpture can be approached from different directions: you can follow your own sketch or prepared model or let the material guide you. If you wish to create a water sculpture, we will help you to test and to determine the water flow to achieve a unique feature. A wide variety of special machinery, light electrical machines and pneumatic tools will be at your disposal.

As a specialised course the maximum number of participants is 6.
* You may also choose to work with marble or other stones.
